Effort is there, results aren't yet

Expectations are something that can be changed or tweaked if needed according to Center Hill’s head softball coach Jayme Eyster. The softball season began for this Mustang team on February 15th with a loss at Horn Lake 11-0. “My goal is to end our season with a 500 record. As of now, March 17th we are a little behind but it’s not because of lack of effort.”
Eyster praises her team for the great effort they are putting forth even though their record doesn’t show it. The Mustangs record half way through their schedule is 1-7. This team is young, not to mention it’s the first official year to compete in division 4-A. According to Eyster the girls know that they need to develop a mental toughness but this is a building year and that it is going to be tough.
After each game Eyster tells the girls that “we have to learn from every game so the same mistakes aren’t made in our next game.” She also instructs her team that “it takes seven good innings of play and that putting runs on the board is important and that wins happen when errors aren’t made.”
This group of girls are dedicated to their team. During the off season they lifted weights, circuit trained, ran timed miles and worked solely on the fundamentals of the game. “I like to think this made us bigger, faster and stronger,” commented Eyster.
Player Emily Schmidt along with Bianca Cowan are two players to watch on this team. “Schmidt is an awesome catcher with great leadership. She is a force with the bat and has the highest batting average on the team,” stated Eyster. “Cowan is an all around athlete who makes plays for us at shortstop when she isn’t suppose too, she has great speed and is our lead-off hitter.”
Coming up for the Mustangs are two home games; March 20th against Strayhorn, 5:00 pm. On Feb. 21st the Mustangs beat Strayhorn away 6-1. “We hit the ball, made few errors and Jayme Nobles pitched a good game.” March 25, 5:00 pm they play host to Lafayette another opponent in their district. “We are still working on the fundamentals of the game, with Lafayette coming up we are working on being disciplined at the plate and in game like situations.” |
