The Olive Branch Board of Aldermen voted to begin construction of the city’s new sewage system that will be able to handle the increased capacity and will also meet EPA guidelines that will be needed if annexation occurs.
The Seventh Annual Miss Springtime Pageant drew seventy-five contestants in seven categories April 30 at the Olive Branch Shrine Club. The Olive Branch Shrine Auxiliary hosted the event.
The Olive Branch tennis team placed second at the State Tennis Tournament in Jackson on May 5.

A runoff will be needed to decide two races in Olive Branch. Mayor Milton Nichols will face Dan Williams for the office of mayor and Michael Easley will face Donald Dale for the office of alderman from Ward 1.
IRS agents seized possessions from Jerry Lee Lewis’ Nesbit home May 6 in a civil collection action to satisfy a $1.6 million debt of back taxes, penalties, and interest. Unless Lewis can pay off the debt, the possessions will be auctioned off.
The Express, a competitive soccer team from DeSoto County, won the spring competitive league title in Memphis, as well as the Mississippi Northern District Title. They will compete for the state title on May 15.

The Regional Firefighters Challenge held in Southaven was a success in more ways than one. First of all, the Southaven team finished second overall in the meet, and the crowd was much bigger than the organizers expected.
Hernando High School will have only one principal next year, the first time in 30 years the school will not operate with co-principals. The school has had two principals, one white and one black, since 1968, the year of integration.
Plans are in the works for an upscale retail development that could draw clothing stores to Olive Branch. The proposed Market at Cherokee Valley would be located at the northwest corner of Craft Road and Goodman Road.
The fifth annual Drive For Athletics, a golf tournament benefiting Olive Branch High School athletic programs, was held at Cherokee Valley Golf Club. Sponsors hope to match the $10,000 goal that has been raised in the past few years.

The Olive Branch Police Department promoted Carlos Garcia, Kevin Delaney, Toni Lesure, Clinton Booker, and Rob Stuard from patrolman to sergeant on May 8, while the Olive Branch Fire Department promoted Jared Kelly, Brett Yoakum, Michael Hogan, and Chris Kubis from firefighter to lieutenant.
DeSoto Central Middle School band director Dennis Cox and 98 band students recently returned from Atlanta where they competed against 26 other schools in the Music in the Parks Festival. Cox’s students stole the show by walking away with four out of five first-place trophies.
Melanie Moore, a fourth grade teacher at Center Hill Elementary was named Teacher of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa International and the Olive Branch Wal-Mart store.
The DeSoto County Angels won first place in the Collierville International Tournament on April 27.
