Rangers save best for last

The Northwest Mississippi Community College golf team saved its best performance of the season until the end and placed third at the MACJC State and Region XXIII Tournament April 28-29 at Forest, Mississippi.

Northwest sophomore T. Robert Oakley of Senatobia qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament by placing third in the state and region event with a two-day score of 144. Oakley will participate in the national tournament May 20-23 at Palm Valley Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.

"We played about as well as we could play," said Northwest Coach Don Edwards. "Oakley has been our most consistent player all season. Now he gets a chance to compete against the best in the country."

Oakley, who made the All-Region team, shot a 76 on the first day of the state and region tourney, then followed that up with a second-day low score of 68.

Other Northwest individual scores included Nick Burstyne of Olive Branch who finished tied for seventh with a 148 and Eric Ainsworth of Senatobia who tied for 21st with a 156. Zach Lambert of Marks placed 45th with a 168, while Joseph Malavasi of Hernando was 48th with a 169.
As a team, Northwest shot a score of 615. Gulf Coast won the event with a 587, followed by Meridian in second place with a 589.
